What is ASTM A501?

This is a U.S. steel pipe standard, ASTM A501 is also an international standard used primarily to specify standard specifications for hot-formed welded and seamless carbon steel structural pipe.
ASTM A501 covers black and hot-dipped galvanized hot-formed welded and seamless carbon steel square, round, rectangular, or specially shaped structural tubing for welded, riveted, or bolted construction of bridges and buildings and for general structural purposes.

ASTM A501 Coverage

Square and rectangular piping (25.4 to 254 mm) in sizes 1 to 10 inches with wall thicknesses from 0.095 to 1.000 inches (2.41 to 25.40 mm) is provided.
Round pipe from nps 1/2 to nps 24 (nominal pipe size) with nominal (average) wall thicknesses of 0.109 to 1.000 inches (2.77 to 25.40 mm) is included.
Special shapes and other sizes of pipe are permitted as long as they meet all other requirements of the code.
